Sangeetha assisted members of the Immigration Bar in the drafting and dissemination of a concerned letter to the Chair of the UK Bar Council. The letter highlights grave concerns that the jurisdiction of Immigration Law has been continuing to list non-urgent oral hearings in the Tribunals against all government guidance on social distancing to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Following the submission of this letter to the Chair of the Bar Council, the President of the Immigration Tribunal suspended all oral hearings. This is a measure welcomed by all members of the Immigration Bar. It is hoped that the Tribunal service will continue to consult with the Immigration Bar to ensure that all hearings, whether conducted on the papers, remotely or in person, continue to comply with Article 6 – the fundamental human right to a fair trial.
