Sangeetha held a webinar with colleague Bronwen Jones to take a deep-dive into some of the UK’s ‘hostile environment policies.’ This webinar explores the genesis of the policy and how the self-proclaimed ‘hostile environment’ has evolved over time to entrench hostility towards migrants.
Sangeetha drills down into how the hostile environment has been quietly procedurally or legally adapted during the currency of the Coronavirus pandemic laying out both overt and covert forms of hostility used to deter, dehumanise and criminalise migrants.
Sangeetha expands upon three ‘overt’ legal mechanisms of the hostile environment – the right to rent, no recourse to public funds and fee waiver policies that either exacerbate or enforce migrant destitution.
