Sangeetha was invited onto LBC radio today to speak with host Nick Ferrari. She urged that an objective and dispassionate perspective is taken when considering what is happening in the Channel.
Sangeetha dispelled myths surrounding asylum seekers and highlighted that their journeys of refuge and hardship do not end at the UK border. One example is through the ‘hostile environment’ which was put in place by Theresa May. Under the hostile environment policy, the UK is able to indefinitely detain non-nationals entering the UK. It is the only country in Europe to allow indefinite, administrative detention.
With this in mind, looking then at what is unfolding along the British coastline we see that this is a crisis of border policy, not a migrant crisis.
The government’s ‘call to arms’ is not the solution. We need to approach our border policy in a lawful and humane way, ensure our border policy is fair, fast and effective. The solution is to create safe and legal pathways for asylum seekers so that no one is forced to take perilous journeys across the Channel at the mercy of brutal smugglers.
