Sangeetha is thrilled to be appointed Director of Fenix Humanitarian Legal Aid‘s Board. Fenix is a growing legal NGO based in Lesvos, Greece, where much of Sangeetha’s time and energy is now focused.
There are over 20,000 asylum seekers in Lesvos. They live in a camp designed to temporarily shelter 2400 asylum seekers. The situation is deplorable. Fenix’s staff and volunteers work tirelessly to ensure that asylum seekers have access to timely and adequate legal information and legal advice in order to make timely family reunification applications, that they are advised on necessary evidence in order to best prepare for their asylum interviews and to document human rights abuses occurring on their ground.
Now, during the course of this pandemic, the figures are even more staggering. There are 4 ICU beds on the entire island. There are now 3 cases of Covid-19 on the island [as of end of March 2020]. There will be scores of avoidable deaths. And that to, within a migrant community that has been pawn to the power games played by the Greek and Turkish States.
Help us prevent avoidable deaths and support our emergency fundraiser here.
